DJ A-Trak - Gangsta Breaks LP

Podcast

Podcast

DJ A-Trak - Gangsta Breaks LP- The vocoder sets it off proper into a bouncy skratch break with strategically placed horn blast at the start of each meter. Next up is a mid tempo electro break followed by a crisp, downtempo electro/fusion break with quick drum rolls and space accents. The first skratch section establishes Atrak's sentence style, fast with no space between sounds, a trend we think we'll start seeing more of. The first side is rounded off by a soundtrack / Portishead type beat. So far so good. The b-side starts off with the same vibrancy as the a-side with a hard mid-tempo break with electric guitar riffs. I like the drum programming on this one, not the standard boom-bip. A cymbal crash starts a standard drum break with added drum rolls. The second skratch sentences, features more quick combinations, this time with more drum snippet sections. The last beat on this side is a deceptively fast electro beat. Not sure if this is a loop or an Atrak creation, but it sounds like vintage Bambaataa in a high school gym type shit. The side end with 3 unskippable sections (1 skratch combo, 2 beats) and 2 tones, the last being locked. The format is simple (minus the unskippable section), giving it the instant usability effect like Duck Breaks, but with a more updated feel for today's techniques.

A-Trak - Monkeyboy breaks

DJ A-Trak - Monkey Boy Breaks LP- The beats are immediately what stands out here; in fact, I'd say they're some the best beats I've heard on a recent break record. Whether he's chopping em to hell, sharing one of his routine beats, slowing down the Jackson Sisters, or exposing some exotic break, it's a pocket full of dollars at Chez Paris (infamous Montreal spizot). As expected, the scratch sentences are quick spliced, precision combos maximized for multiple hits and inventive variations. And not forgetting the fundamentals, Atrak includes 4 basic unskippable combos, making this battle prime. Also includes several tones. 8 beats in all. Recommended
